Everybody Has a Belly Button

Everybody Has a Belly Button is a delightful book for babies and toddlers that teaches them about skin color, equality, and equity in the same way we teach our babies where their belly button is, their nose, their eyes and their toes. It illustrates that “everybody” is the same. And the subtle differences in our body’s colors (eyes, hair, skin) is what makes us all beautiful and special, “like a rainbow.” Babies learn through rhyme—it boosts brain activity and early literacy, and this book starts the conversation about racial equality immediately, through effortless rhymes and beautiful illustrations, while also tenderly pointing out their other tiny, baby, body parts. 

Everybody Has a Belly Button was inspired by the death of George Floyd. As I searched for the right whimsical words to teach my own 15-month-old baby about racial equity, I recited a rhyme that captivated him, and I’m thrilled to share it with every baby here and every baby on the way!
